GUIDE EYE

Introduction

According to the research, there are 220 million people suffering from visual impairment or blindness. My father is one of them. He has difficulty taking care of himself, needs assistance to walk, and is extremely inconvenient to go outside, but he is also a person with high self-esteem and doesn’t like to ask others for help. I asked many visually impaired users and found that they do not like to seek help from people around them.

Goal

The guide aids on the market cannot fully solve the needs of the visually impaired group in all aspects. Most of them show a sensitive state to strangers, but they are eager to communicate with more people. After exploring their willingness to socialize and their daily status, I took this opportunity to design an app to help people with low vision to live a normal life, hoping to maintain their psychological status and help them integrate better into society.

Background
Research

According to the research, 75% of visually impaired Internet users are post-90s and post-80s, of which 45% are post-90s, and 30% are post-80s. The 47th Statistical Report on the Development of the Internet in China shows that the post-90s and post-80s account for about 51% of Internet users, and the visually impaired users are more concentrated in the post-90s and post-80s, and the post-80s and post-90s are the main force among the visually impaired group of Internet users. Visually impaired users showed the main feature of youthfulness.

Three things characterize the target group of visually impaired users.

■  Young and concentrated
■  A generally high level of education.
■  Design standards for visually impaired accessible user experience are not yet perfect.

🠒 Questionnaire

A total of 20 questionnaires were distributed in the survey. Among them, 12 were male and 8 were female. The age distribution was normal, which covers the basic situation of modern visually impaired people. In this survey, the ratio was 12:8. 50% of the 20 people had visual impairment due to congenital reasons, and acquired reasons caused the other 50%. Among the 20 interviewees, 9 lived with their friends, 7 lived with their families, and 4 lived alone. Different living environments lead to different needs for help and communication among the visually impaired.

🠒 Interview

Through communication with the visually impaired, it was concluded that the marketed assistive devices do not fully address the needs of the visually impaired. After exploring their willingness to socialize and their daily state, we analyzed the ambivalence of the visually impaired community, who are socially fearful and sensitive but eager to socialize.
In order to reduce the learning costs for the visually impaired, the product designed through the interviews should be a mobile phone based app that uses a voice interaction system to allow the low vision group to better integrate into society and life and to assist in travel navigation.

Having minimal vision in one eye, a narrow field of vision, taking a single-hole telescope in looking at something.

Q: What is the biggest difficulty in daily life?

It's not easy to get around. I walk carefully and do everything slower than everyone else. I hadn't considered learning Braille.

Q: How often you use your mobile phone to access the internet and what problems you have?

I am online for about 2-3 hours a day. With the help of some software that helps with low vision, read-aloud function (speed adjustment, pause), voice to text, try to communicate by listening and speaking. I prefer to use smart speakers such as Xiaodu, AI voice control.

The eyes are covered in a haze and can see very faintly and vaguely distinguish the color and area of the object they are looking at but cannot see clear text.

Q: What is the biggest difficulty in daily life?

As a result of the sudden loss of vision, I was unable to maintain my previous habits, I could no longer drive, I had limited mobility and I started using crutches.
(I feel unsteady on my feet after my eyesight is impaired), and I can no longer inject insulin on my own and need help from others.
I need help navigating information and learning how to use the voice reading function on the screen.

Q: How often you use your mobile phone to access the internet and what problems you have?

I surf the web about 4-5 hours a day, reading information on the screen with the help of those around me, using screen reader accessibility.
Along with the voice assistant, I can call for help by voice if I have an urgent question.
